ABAKUYA, est un voyage rythmique redoutable mêlant chants, danses et transe...
Le projet musical Abakuya est né de la rencontre entre deux musiciens, Jimi Sofo (Australie) et François Essindi (Cameroun). Motivés par un voyage d'échange organisé par l'association Akiba au Cameroun en 2006. Lors de ce voyage au Cameroun, les deux artistes ont rencontré et échangé avec les musiciens traditionnels du sud Cameroun. Tour à tour, d'autres musiciens se sont ajoutés

François Essindi est l'initiateur du mouvement O'toulbaka, un groupe de percussionnistes alliant Conte, Rap, Chant et Danse dans les rue de Yaoundé dans les année 80 au Cameroun. Un ensemble enthousiaste faisant le bonheur des instruments percussifs africains.
Comédien, danseur, conteur et musicien, François Essindi doit très vite sa notoriété dans le pays à son maniement des percussions. Son jeu sera rapidement remarqué pour la vitalité qu'il sait mêler à la délicatesse du phrasé des frappes. Il devient ainsi l'incontournable recours parmi la jeune vague des artistes et des chansonniers camerounais désireux de réhabiliter le tam-tam d'appel, le Mvet, la coquille d'escargot... alors largement rejetés par les musiques populaires camerounaises. En France, le leader d'O'toulbaka y dévoilera aussitôt des atouts artistiques éprouvés qu'on lui soupçonnait déjà là-bas au Cameroun. Bercé par les musiques et les cultures anciennes, il épure aujourd'hui à Paris l'art de la harpe d'Afrique centrale, le Ngomo au Cameroun, ainsi que son jeu de mvet, autre cordophone menacé d'extinction dans son pays au même titre que le ngomo ou ngombi.
Conteur du monde Boulou, François Essindi reste plus que jamais un Artiste, n'hésitant pas à explorer par ses compositions des voies qu'on aurait cru disparues à jamais, innovant par la même occasion l'approche et la qualité des rythmes camerounais.
Essindi s'en va à la recherche des sensations d' une musique originelle « L' EKANG »

Nyanga François Essindi, is an actor, dancer, storyteller and musician, was born in Cameroon.
Due to his ability of playing the percussions, he became very quickly famous in his own country. His playing attracted attention thanks to the energy he mixes with the delicate phrasing of his touch. Thus, he became the recourse that cannot be ignored for the new wave of local artists and singers in Cameroon, who wished to reuse the Tam-tam call, the Mvet, the Snail shell…. That had been banned from the popular Cameroonian music.
The leader of Otoubalka demonstrated soon in France the artistic gifts he had already proved in his native country. , Brought up listening to old music and culture , today in Paris he refines the art of Traditional Harp from central Africa, the Ngomo in Cameroon as well as his playing the Mvet, another endangered string instrument, as well as Ngomo or Ngombi .
A storyteller from the Bulu world, François Essindi is more than ever an Artist, who never stops exploring new ways through his writing that might have been lost forever, innovating at the same time the approach and the quality of Cameroonian rhythms.
Sofo Jimi :
An Australian Bass player and music writer, Jimi Sofo is an inspired globe-trotter, bringing his ears and instruments through the whole world. His playing is full of poetry, free and ludic.

The musical project Abakuya was born with the meeting of two musicians, Jimi Sofo (Australia) and François Essindi (Cameroon), and toock place in 2006 thanks to an exchange travel organized by the Akiba Association in Cameroon. Other musicians came in turn and decided to travel together: thus, Abakuya is a journey….
